Coldstream Supportive Of Rec Master Plan With Suggestions

Sep 10, 2018 | 6:57 AM

Coldstream Council has given its general support to a Greater Vernon Recreation Master Plan.

The plan has 30 recommendations covering 4 categories ranging from service delivery to facilities.

Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick says Council had some suggestions.

“One was how we would include development cost charges as part of the funding proposals that would go forward with this. The other is that we are very supportive of the processes that lead to new facilities.”

Garlick says council wanted to make clear that while you can identify the facilities but that doesn’t mean you have to have them.

“What you do have to have is a clear process that engages the community, builds support and then the community decides as a whole do you need that facility and are they willing to support it.”

Garlick says public input is necessary to find out the answers on a large scale.

He understands the idea of a new aquatic facility gets a big mention.

“Well, we hear about it. We hear about it from people but it’s like a lot of things. You hear about it from the people that want it. You don’t hear the opposite side. People don’t take the effort to come out and talk to you about why they don’t want something, right, until it’s actually on the table.”

He says you have to go through the process of laying out a good plan so the people can weigh the options properly.

A final draft plan is expected to be ready for approval early in October
