Kids Ride Free In New Bus Program

The City of Vernon has launched new programs aimed at making it easier and more affordable for families to use the transit system.

One is called Kids Ride Free, where an adult transit customer with a valid monthly pass, DayPASS, U-PASS or BC Bus Pass can bring up to four children aged 12 and under on board with them for free.

On weekends and stat holidays, the program expands to include adult riders paying with cash or tickets.

Children five and under always ride the bus for free when accompanied by an adult.

School District 22 classes can also apply to travel on the buses for one round trip per year at no cost.

“The Vernon Regional Transit Class Rides Free program provides students the opportunity to learn how to use our local transit system through first-hand experience,” says a City news release.

“Families and caregivers have told us that they need more transportation options.” says Mayor Akbal Mund. “The Kids Ride Free program will provide relief for families who are already using the system and encourage new families to try taking the bus.”

Ther new programs take effect Saturday, Sept. 1.

“Riding the bus is an important life skill,” says Active Transportation Coordinator Angela Broadbent. “The Class Rides Free program will ensure that Vernon students have the opportunity to learn how to use public transit and build the confidence to ride the bus on their own.”

Teachers can learn more about the Class Rides Free program and how to apply by contacting the City of Vernon Transportation Department.

The District of Coldstream and the Regional District of the North Okanagan have also adopted the Class Rides Free program for schools in their regions.

Schools located outside of Vernon should contact their local government for information on how to apply.
