Seniors Home Evacuated

Aug 23, 2018 | 8:00 AM

A threat made over the phone led to residents being evacuated from a Kelowna retirement home Wednesday morning.

The threat of an unknown nature was directed towards a facility on Gertsmar Road by an unknown person.

After an assessment by police and fire, it was decided to evacuate the 170 residents.

“One of those evacuated residents was medically assessed, treated and released at the scene by BC Ambulance Service, after they went into medical distress related to an ongoing medical condition,” says Cpl. Tania Carroll.

Mounties say their investigation into the alleged threat remains active and ongoing.

“Police officers identified and subsequently apprehended a person-of-interest at the scene,” says Carroll. “We take all complaints of threats very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation.”

Police have since conducted a search of the property. Nothing of interest or concern was located during that search and residents were allowed to return to their units.
