Councillor To Run For Mayor

Mayor Janice Brown will have some competition in Spallumcheen in the October civic election.

Councillor Christine Fraser has decided to take a shot at the position.

“I’ve been on council for three terms and I just felt it was time. I do a lot of work behind the scenes and we’ve got a lot of big projects going on right now and I think that I’d be a good leader for the community.”

Fraser says she’s ready to work hard and be a voice for the people of the township.

“I’ve always worked really, really hard on everything that I’ve ever done. I listen to people, So, when residents phone me with concerns I make sure those concerns are addressed, and the work I do fighting for our community. I think all of those things put together make me a really good leader for our community.”

Fraser says the getting the Hullcar Aquifer problem solved would be her main priority.

She says the provincial government has put some money toward the aquifer but it hasn’t addressed the contamination.

Fraser says there should be a moratorium on nutrient applied to the fields above the aquifer.

She’s also concerned about is how the new cannabis regulations will affect the community.

“There really hasn’t been any public consultation with the producers, municipalities, with the public to explain how it all works and why they’ve made it a permitted use in the Agricultral Land Reserve.”

Fraser notes that 55 per cent of Spallumcheen’s land base is in the ALR, meaning the potential for more cannabis facilities is there.

One is already going up on Pleasant Valley Road.
