RDNO To Seek Approval For New Wastewater

RDNO To Seek Approval For New Wastewater Treatment Facility

Aug 20, 2018 | 6:45 AM

RDNO Directors have approved establishment and loan authorization bylaws for the North Okanagan Wastewater Recovery Service.

The service would cover portions of Electoral Areas B and C, the Township of Spallumcheen and the Okanagan Indian Band at the north end of Swan Lake.

The North Swan Lake area  is the last area of the Okanagan Basin that does not have a wastewater treatment facility.

Board Chair Bob Fleming says the regional district would run a petition for approval from residents of the electoral areas to borrow up to 5.2 million dollars.

“We’re looking at using the approved funding, although there would be a loan, but in fact we’re contemplating fees as opposed to taxation to pay for this.”

Fleming says when the petition goes out the district will try to be as specific as possible as what it is going to cost residents.

“So that’s hopefully gonna be on the petition, so we’re gonna have to have examples of what, say a residential user would be paying, what a commercial property would be using and whether that’s on an acreage basis or on a use basis, we haven’t quite determined.

The total cost of the project is almost 37 million dollars, with much of it intended to be paid for through provincial and federal grants.

The Okanagan Basin Water Board has also agreed to put in 5.9 million dollars, while Spallumcheen’s share comes to one and a half million.
