Farewell Ceremony For Cadets

The hundreds of cadets who have called Vernon home for a few weeks this summer, are almost ready to close camp.

The Cadet Training Centre wraps up its summer season with its Sunset Parade tonight at Dieppe Square.

Chief Warrant officer Ava Durrell says it’s the culmination of six weeks of training, and will feature over 1,000 cadets on parade.

“We do have a very special reviewing officer this year. We have the Commander of the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger Support Group, Brigadier General Kelly Woiden.”

The 12 to 18 year old cadets who have taken training and programs at the centre, come from all over Western Canada.

“The Camp has gone very smoothly this summer,” says Durrell. “It’s been absolutely amazing working with the staff and cadets, and the cadets have always consistently tried their hardest. We’ve had so many successes.”

Durrell says the smoky skies have only created minor issues.

“It has had a little bit of an impact. For some of our training opportunities, we have had to either put it hold or cancel it, but we have been able to work through it.”

Durrell says the public is invited to watch tonight’s parade and
demonstrations, starting at 5:45.

The cadet camp has operated every summer since 1949.
