Coldstream Sending Liquid Waste & Borrowing Plan To Province

Coldstream Council has passed a motion to send it’s Liquid Waste Management plan to the province for approval.

Mayor Jim Garlick notes it’s been a long, drawn out process due to staffing issues with the government.

“And finally we’ve been given an employee. a staff member at the province that is going to deal specifically with this and get it done. So, we’re now moving it along to get it signed off by the minister.”

The plan is an update from the 1994 plan that addresses the growth that has a taken place and the capacity for the future.

“It includes what the plan is for the community, any expansion of it, the existing infrastructure and the costs to replace that infrastructure.”

Garlick notes that without an approved plan a community cannot borrow without going to the community for approval.

Getting the plan in and approved is crucial to applying to borrow funds towards the cost of approving replacing the Kalavista sewer-lift station.

A decision on how to do that has taken some time.

There was some thought about moving it from near the boat launch area to the park across the road, but the impact was too great.

Mayor Garlick says the plan to rebuild it where it is also is to invasive to the boat launch.

“There’s another lake access on the other side of the channel at that boat launch that we’re going to look at as a possible location for that lift station. We can fit it on there and also allow for a trail passed for people to access the lake.”

Council gave three reading to a bylaw to borrow 300 thousand dollars towards the more than 900 thousand dollar cost of replacing the lift station.

That would go to the Inspector of Municipalities for approval before adoption.
