City To End RCMP Cost “Subsidy”

Aug 14, 2018 | 6:24 AM

The City of Vernon has set a date to end what it says is years of subsidizing the RCMP support costs of other local communities.

Mayor Akbal Mund says they will stop covering those fees as of September 4th for communities like Armstrong, Enderby and Spallumcheen.

“What we’re trying to do is protect the Vernon taxpayer, because that’s what we get elected for. So we will protect the Vernon taxpayer, and if we move forward with this, we’re going to save some money,” Mund told Beach Radio News

The savings will be about 300-thousand dollars a year.

Mund says the province says there will be no extra costs to the other jurisdictions.

“That’s what has been stated. We’ll wait and see. They may get charged by the province for some some of these costs. We don’t know. And if they do, that’s what it should be.”

Mund says it doesn’t make sense that there is no cost to the other jurisdictions , yet Vernon has been paying the province for it.

Support services include positions like court liaison, watch clerks, general investigative support, CPIC, crime analyst and detention facilities.
