Pay Hikes Recommended For Council

Pay Hikes Recommended For Council

Aug 13, 2018 | 6:19 AM

A citizens committee is recommending pay increases for Vernon council members.

Former mayor Rob Sawatzky chaired a three-person remuneration review, and the group’s 10 recommendations will be presented to council today.

Among them is increasing the mayor and councillor’s base pay by 11 percent in January to offset federal tax changes that will eliminate their current one-third exemption.

Sawatzky says in his report, the responsibilities of mayor and council are significant and complex — and compensation programs should reflect that.

His committee supports gradually raising the mayor’s pay over the next four years, from 76-thousand dollars this fall, to 98-thousand by 2021.

Councillors would receive 37% of what the mayor is paid, up from the current 34%, which works out to about 28-thousand dollars a year.

Glenn Benischek, the CEO of VantageOne Credit Union and Wee Yee, retired engineering executive and 55+ BC Games Society President, were the other committee members.
