Watching Wildfires Burn

Watching Wildfires Burn

Aug 3, 2018 | 1:45 PM

It may be cooler but wildfires continue to burn in the North Okanagan.

The Mabel Creek wildfire East of Mabel lake is classified as out of control and more than 200 hectares in size.

The Sugar Mountain wildfire is 170 hectares, burning east of Sugar Lake.

However, the BC Wildfire Service is letting them burn for the moment.

“Those fires, we don’t have crews on the ground at right now,” explained wildfire spokesperson Nicole Bonnett.  “We had an aerial assessment done yesterday of all the fires in the area and we are montoring them and keeping an eye on their activity.”

Bonnett said there will be some area restrictions in place this weekend for people recreating in the vicinity and people should check the BC Wildfire Service website or Facebook page for those.

Meanwhile, Bonnett said 13 personnel with heavy equipment and a chopper remained at the scene of the four-hectare Proctor Road fire due to its proximity to Lumby.
