Vernon Tourism Looking Good

Summer is half over, and so far, it’s been a steady one as far as tourism in Vernon.

The City’s tourism manager, Ange Chew, says visitor numbers have been on par with last year.

“We didn’t have the best weather in June and July. Early July was a little bit tough for us because it was a little bit cool, but since the weather has turned, we definitely see it picked up for all our tourism partners.”

Chew says they’ve been using social media to try to combat the smoky conditions this summer.

She says it’s an issue impacting most BC communities, and they’ve been conducting real-time campaigns to show potential visitors it’s not that bad.

“We’ve been using web cams and live video to really showcase on social media and digitally what are the current conditions in Vernon. And everybody in the valley has been participating.”

She feels that has had an impact, and led to fewer cancellations.

Chew says the upcoming BC Day long weekend is usually the busiest one of the summer.

“It’s going to be a very busy August long weekend. We have the BC provincial boys baseball tournament in town, so between the two categories (pee wee and mosquiito), we’re expecting over 20 teams in town,” adds Chew.
