Members of the Vernon Pickleball Association are targeting the end of August for completion of a new 12 court facility in Marshall Field.

The 350 member group has overwhelmingly supported a 145-thousand dollar loan from the City of Vernon, to be paid back over 10 years.

“Of course the board will be putting a strategic plan  in place for loan repayment using various means. We’ll continue to do fundraising activities.”

Club spokesperson Anne Longley says the loan will allow them to install an acrylic surface, rather than the blacktop some tennis courts have.

“What we’re playing on tennis court right now, a lot of it is blacktop. The acrylic surface will have all the lines, the pickleball court lines. It looks quite different from what a tennis court would look like.”

She says the new courts will be great to host outdoor tournaments.

“It’s a very engaging sport. It’s very fun to play and easy to learn. As I mentioned before it’s the fastest growing sport in North America with millions of people playing now world wide.”

The group has members ranging in age from 14 to 92.
