Evacuation Alert Issued For Kelowna Fire

New Wildfire Held, Human Caused

Reports quoting the Kelowna Fire Department say young people playing with a lighter caused the fire.

Update: 3:50 pm

Firefighting crews have made good progress on the Yates Road area fire in Kelowna and it is now considered held.

This means the fire crews have determined that the fire is not likely to spread beyond existing or pre-determined boundaries, unless weather conditions change.

Emergency personnel will continue actioning the fire through the evening and night.

As a precautionary measure, the evacuation alert for the 933 properties in the Wilden area (access via Rio, Upper Canyon and Union Road) will remain in effect overnight and until further notice. A wildfire in Kelowna’s Glenmore area has led to an evacuation alert for residents in the Yates Road area of the Wilden neighbourhood.

The precautionary measure affects 933 properties.

The fire is being actioned by air and ground crews from the City and province.

It started in a forested area, close to nearby homes.

A map showing affected properties can be viewed at cordemergency.ca/map.

Residents in the area are advised to be ready to leave their home at a moment’s notice, and they should be prepared to be away from their home for an extended period of time, make arrangements for pets and pack essential items such as medicines and important documents.
