Bylaw Could "Bee" Changed

Bylaw Could “Bee” Changed

Jul 25, 2018 | 6:45 AM

There could be more bee colonies around Vernon, if a resident gets her way.

Dawn Tucker is asking council to consider allowing urban beekeeping in the city.

It’s currently allowed only in certain areas.

Tucker doesn’t think it would be a safety concern.

“Education is a big component. Unless honey bees have a reason to sting, they’re not stinging. People are standing close to the hives, they are not being swarmed or stung. Properly done, you can have a good balance between residents and bees.”

Tucker says many other communities have moved forward with urban beekeeping, saying it helps pollinate flowers, and benefits crops.

She has been urban beekeeping in Vernon for 5 years.

She says she does it to preserve the population, more than for the honey.
