Vernon Tackles Opiod Crisis With Action Team

Jul 24, 2018 | 6:54 AM

Vernon is getting its plan ready to address the opioid crisis.

The City is getting provincial funding of 100-thousand dollars to set- up a community action team, starting with a communications plan.

Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says the purpose is to reduce the number of overdose deaths.

“I just needed to pause for a minute and repeat that. This is the first time I’ve written a grant where the major goal was to stop people from dying in our community.”

Twenty-two people died in Vernon last year due to opioid overdoses, with ten fatalities to the end of May this year.

“So really what we want to understand is how are our current programs and services working, or what changes need to be made to better serve people and ultimately save lives.”

Sharkey says they will be trying to reach the mostly male “hidden” drug users, by targeting bars, restaurants, gyms and workplaces.
