Lake Country Seeks Infrastructure Funds For Water Improvements

Lake Country Council has approved a grant application under the Canada Infrastructure Program for funds for its Okanagan Centre Water Source and Distribution Improvement Project.

The District is seeking 9.7 million dollars.

Mayor James Baker says much work has to be done.

“Most of it is fixing failed Infrastructure and expanding infrastructure into areas that don’t have potable water, well they have potable water but not on our system.”

The end result of an overhaul would allow properties on a well or pump system from the lakes to come into the District’s supply.

There’s also the matter of being able to improve fire protection.

“Some areas that don’t have the municipal pipes that don’t have pressure enough for fire flow. They still have fire protection because we have tankers that can get to and fight the fires.”

A staff report says the area will face long term loss of supply and an inability to fight structural and interface fires if these issues are not addressed.

The grant would also work toward installation of UV treatment on the surface water source.

It’s a key objective for the District, as it will ensure redundant dual disinfection methods that are in compliance with the requirements of the Interior Health Authority assuring the prevention of illness due to water-borne disease.

The full cost of the project is over 12 million dollars.

The District would put up $2,586,990 with money coming from water development cost charges reserves and water revenues.
