Hotel Planned For Enderby

Hotel Planned For Enderby

Jul 23, 2018 | 7:21 AM

Enderby Council is supporting the idea of a hotel development on Railway Street.

Mayor Greg McCune says the owners of the Ashley Home Store property have had a vision for decades of a hotel – tourist zone in that area along the Riverwalk.

He says the city desperately needs a hotel.

“It definitely is, you know, one of our missing pieces of the puzzle, so, it’s nice to have somebody come forward  and say no I don’t really want to sell my buildings and let them become anything. I really want it to be in that direction.”

McCune says at best there are about 20 rooms available in the area and another hotel is needed to meet increasing demand.

“The Enderbeer festival is coming up at the end of this month. The arts council stuff is the exact same weekend. So if you’re choosing to come to Enderby for either of those two events or at the same time, you’re pretty much forced to go home right after.

McCune says Sicamous recently hosted a provincial sports championship and it found it could use two more hotels and he says that’s evidence that Enderby could benefit from overflow.

The area has long been pegged for a hotel and the Mayor is happy the property owners are ready to go ahead.

“It’s been the thought of councils for many years that that’s what that area would suit, so it’s just a matter of completing that paperwork. It was a unanimous decision and those people will go ahead and start to market.”

The Official Community Plan already supports the idea of a hotel, by an amendment will be drawn up to express the policy with a greater degree of specificity.

Public consultations will then be held.
