Board Seeks Say On Pot Shops

Board Seeks Say On Pot Shops

Jul 23, 2018 | 7:25 AM

The Regional District Board is looking to have some control over potential cannabis shops wanting to open in Electoral Areas B, C and F.

That includes places like Silver Star, Swan Lake and Mabel Lake.

Board chair Bob Fleming says there is nothing covering that in their zoning bylaws now.

“That basically means they could set up at their will because there is no business licensing in the electoral areas. The provincial government doesn’t give us that mandate, so we don’t really have any means of knowing what’s being located where,” Fleming tells Beach Radio News.

Fleming says the board has given first reading to a bylaw that would require the operator to seek a variance to open such a shop.

“This is sales and lounges and so on. So if somebody wanted to set up a cannabis shop in Silver Star village, and this bylaw passes, then they would need to come to the regional district and seek a variance to the bylaw.”

Fleming says once recreational pot sales become legal, they will make changes to allow the stores in certain zones.
