City Looks to Regulate Storage Containers

The City of Armstrong is trying to come up with a way to clarify regulations on the use of Sea Can storage containers.

One might think that wouldn’t be an issue in a small community, but Mayor Chris Pieper believes it is.

He says it’s difficult to meet all the regulations of the BC Building Code and storage containers.

“We want to be able to regulate storage containers in commercial and industrial lands, but we have to do it in a way that we control where they’re located, we control how they’re situated.”

Pieper says there’s also the matter of aesthetics.

The proposed policy clarifies the requirement for a Building Permit.

Building Permit requirements would be established by the BC Building Code.

“Like there’s lots of them in town, especially in the commercial areas.We want to legalize them and not create too much of a problem for the owners.
They’re an important part of their business.”

Pieper says the city doesn’t want them being used for setting up workshops or even temporary housing.

They’ would only be allowed on residential property for a period of 60 days for emergencies or construction work.
