Arbor Lee Fire Update

Eight of 12 units of the Arbor Lee apartment complex at 3800 40th Avenue in Vernon are heavily damaged after a fire last night.

Vernon Fire Rescue was called just before 7 pm when heavy black smoke was seen coming from the upper balcony of one apartment.

It took 30 firefighters with two engines and a ladder truck several hours to put out the fire as it spread into other apartments and the roof.

Four apartments sustained heavy fire damage and there is smoke and water damage to others.

Firefighters from Coldstream and BX joined in the fight and some crews were at the building through the night.

No residents were injured.

One firefighter needed to be treated for minor injuries.

Acting Fire Chief David Lind says it was a difficult job but he credited first arriving firefighters who he said did the right things in those first moments which sets up the rest of the operation for success.

Lind called the fight a “one team” effort with many dedicated people from the different organizations working together to achieve a common goal.“

The complex has been secured and fire investigators will be on scene shortly.

At this point no cause of the fire has been determined, but there was speculation a it may have started from a barbecue propane tank as some residents hear an explosion.

It is unlikely that residents will be able to return to the building for several months,.

Vernon’s Emergency Social Services is providing initial support with a place to stay and groceries for a few days.
