Jul 5, 2017 | 12:07 PM

Environment Canada is warning we can expect temperatures to get up to the high 30’s over the next few days.

You’re advised to take precautions to avoid over heating yourself.

Dr Sue Pollock, medical health officer with Interior Health says there are a number of things you can do.

“Try and stay cool. That would be moving to an indoor environment that has air conditioning. So that may be in their own home if they have air conditioning or in a public facility like a mall. they should drink plenty of cool, n ion-alcoholic fluids and also planning their outdoor activity around the cooler time periods of the day.”

That would be before 11 am or after 4 pm.

Dr. Pollock says there are specific symptom of heat-related illness to look for.

“So often, heat-related illness will start with the individual having very pale, cool and moist skin. They may be sweating very heavily. They may experience muscle cramping, swelling fatigue and weakness.”

Further symptoms could include confusion, disorientation, even hallucinations which could lead to seizures and loss of consciousness.

Dr. Pollock says there are things you can do if you do get over heated.

“Moving to a cooler environment, drinking plenty of cool, non-alcoholic fluids, resting, taking a cool shower or bath and wearing lightweight clothing.”

Pollock says if symptoms persist for longer than an hour or get worse, get to a doctor.
