Firefighters Hold Back Kaleden Wildfire

Firefighters have been able to get an upper hand on the wildfire at Kaleden.

Acting Fire Chief Denis Gaudry tells KISS FM it’s been held at 6.5 hectares.

He says members of the Kaleden volunteer fire department were backed by fire fighters from the BC Wildfire Service and air support shortly after the fire broke out late yesterday afternoon.

They managed to prevent most of the spread before turning it over to a new crew late last night.

“By basically by dark, with the help of the air tankers and the helicopters and all the hard work of all of the firefighters, all of the agencies together, we managed to knock most of it down.”

“The overnight crews continued to do an awesome job. They pretty much had the fire surrounded by hose and fire guard.”

Those firefighters were from Naramata, Penticton, Okanagan Falls and The Wildfire Service.

Gaudry says 10 Kaleden firefighters and 7 Wildfire Service firefighters are working it today.

” The fire spotted, lifted embers and burning stuff and deposited up to 300 metres ahead of the fire, so we’ve got a lot of little spot fires that we’re going in and putting out.”

Gaudry says as long as firefighters get all of those and the wind doesn’t come up everything should be fine.

An evacuation order for 18 nearby homes continues as does an evacuation alert for 165 other homes

One home was destroyed along with an out building.

Acting Chief Gaudry says a couple of other homes may also have been damaged.
