Okanagan And Kalamalka Lakes Drop More

Jul 4, 2017 | 11:27 AM

It was a good weekend for the lakes to recede.

Tom Wilson with the Central Regional District’s Emergency Operations Centre says both Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake are down.

“It looks like it’s gone down almost two centimetressince yesterday on Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake is also down a little bit more actually, a bit more like 2.9 centimetres.”

Kal Lake is down just over 4 centimetres since Friday, while Okanagan Lake is down over 7 centimetres.

Wilson says the hot weather will help with evaporation.

“Yeah, the trend should continue this way, two to three centimetres a day hopefully. We’re still 48 centimetres above full pool though, so it’s going to take awhile for it to get back to what we’d consider normal for this time of year.”

The improved weather is also bringing out boaters.

“There was a lot more traffic on the lake in the Central Okanagan part of things than we’ve seen in awhile but I didn’t hear any reports of damage or conflicts between boaters and people on shore.”

Wilson warns that Okanagan Lake is still at its highest point of the year and even when it’s back at full pool people are still going to have to exercise caution on it from north to south
