Wildfire Service Urges Caution

Jun 30, 2017 | 5:48 AM

Small campfires are still allowed in the Kamloops Fire Centre going into the long weekend.

“There’s always a possibility that it would change, but right now it’s looking as though the long weekend will be a long weekend with campfires allowed.”

However, Max Birkner with the BC Wildfire Service says many areas in the region are dry.

“Right now, the fire danger rating in the Kamloops Fire Centre is high to extreme, so it’s very,. very hot out there and it’s supposed to be quite hot through the weekend with not a lot of wind and a lot of sun.”

Birkner urges caution for anyone who’s going to be in the woods.

“We’re asking people to be very careful with their campfires. Quite a lot of our fires this year have been human caused and those kind of human caused fires take away resources when we could be fighting just lightning fires.”

Birkner says there’s been 45 fires in the centre this season, with nine currently active.
