May Overdose Deaths In BC

Jun 30, 2017 | 11:21 AM

The BC Coroners Service says illicit drug deaths in British Columbia continued to account for an average of more than four deaths each day in the month of May.

It says a total of 129 people died as a result of illicit drug use during the month of May, down only a little from the April figure of 136.

The proportion of those deaths in which fentanyl was detected continues to climb.

That was the case in 72 per cent of the deaths over the first four months of the year.

The percentage for May is not yet available.

Almost three-quarters of the illicit drug deaths involved people between the ages of 30 and 59 years.

More than four out of five who died were male and more than 90% of the deaths occurred in indoor settings.

The Coroners Service says until now, no tests have been done for the presence of carfentanyl.

Statistics on deaths in which that is detected will be available in coming months.
