Funtastic Hits Vernon

Jun 30, 2017 | 9:14 AM

It’s going to be a Funtastic weekend in Vernon.

The 33rd annual Funtastic slo-pitch tournament and music festival gets underway today.

Funtastic Sports Society Executive Director Tony Pallas says more than 200 teams are here for the slo-pitch tournament.

“We see slo-pitch teams from all over western Canada and some as far north as the Yukon. A lot of the teams are returning teams. Some of them have been playing in this tournament for upwards of 20 years so it’s pretty cool to see them coming back every year to Vernon.”

Games are being played at the DND grounds. Alexis, Kin and Grahame Parks.

The first pitch crosses the plate at 4 this afternoon.

Tony Pallas says its a family -themed event with a few changes from previous years.

“We solicited the public,. We solicited most of the ball players and they asked for it.and they got it. So, we’ve got some awesome changes going on
for this year’s Funtastic event, including a family-friendly zone from 11 til fourish everyday. Families can come out and catch some really good slo-pitch ball and listen to some really good music that we’ve got playing throughout the day.”

The entire event is volunteer driven and and is a community benefit
.
“The proceeds of this event, 100 per cent go back into the community through the Funtastic community grant program, which funds non-profit sports groups in the North Okanagan. So we really appreciate all thge local support of anybody that can come up and hang out at the Funtastic site.”

Daytime music at the DND festival site is free.

Night concerts are 30 dollars a day or 60 for the weekend and are available online or on site.

Vancouver band ” The Odds ” highlight the show tonight.

Saturday, Canada Day, is an all-Canadian day with the popular Okanagan cover band “The Young Un’s” on stage in the evening.
