Vernon School District Hiring More Teachers

Jun 23, 2017 | 10:42 AM

The Vernon School District is getting ready for classes in September.

District Superintendent Joe Rogers says schools have been given their staffing allocations

That includes teaching and special ed time, library time, admin time and more teachers.

`Thirty-eight more teachers than we had last September. The breakdown is 21 elementary divisions and 17 secondary teachers which will add about a hundred and ten new classes or courses in secondary schools.

This is due to the Supreme Court order that class room sizes be reduced and due to an increase in enrolment.

Space is going to be needed to accommodate more students and smaller classes.

`To accommodate these extra divisions elementary we’ve put in five portable. We have one at Hillview, one at Harwood, two at Alexis Park and one at Okanagan Landing that are being constructed, so they are ready to go for September.“

New desks, chairs, tables, computers and other learning resources are on order.

Enrolment is expected to be up between 60 and 70 , although Rogers admits it could be more.

The Vernon Teachers Association has complained the school district has been slow to move, but Joe Rogers says funding has just come through

“We just got our classroom enhancement funding from the ministry two or three days ago, confirming we had enough money to hire all those teachers. But we’ve been working and posting all those jobs.

Rogers say the District will be working well into July to sort them out.

He says the enhancement funding totals about 4.9 million dollars over the base funding from last year.

Rogers says if more money is necessary the ministry has promised the contract will be fully funded
