More Teachers Needed For Vernon

Jun 23, 2017 | 8:19 AM

It appears the Vernon School District needs to hire more teachers for the next school year starting in the fall.

A report to the Vernon School Board this week suggests the district is going to need 508 full-time equivalent teachers.

That`s 39 more than it started with last September.

The report by Malcolm Reid, the Director of Instruction for Teaching Personnel, also recommends 3 more principals and vice-principals for a total of 38.

This all due to an increase in enrolment and the order by the Supreme Court of Canada last year that BC reduce class sizes.

Reid also says in his report that enrolment is forecast to be 8,434 students for the next school year.

That`s about 60 more funded full-time equivalent students than expected for the 2016/17 school year.

He says changes in special needs enrolment can have a significant impact on both funding and class sizes.

The current forecast is for a similar special needs enrolment going into next year.
