The speaker of the BC Legislature was chosen this morning.

He comes from the Okanagan.

The announcement made by the Clerk of the House Craig James that only one candidate put their name forward

`Therefore, I wish to announce that Steve Thomson, the member for Kelowna-Mission is declared elected speaker for the duration of this parliament or up until a new speaker is elected.

Thomson was then ceremoniously led to the chair

`Well, honourable members, I`d like to humbly thank all the members of this assembly for the great honour that you’ve bestowed upon me today by asking me to be your speaker. In keeping with the tradition of high office I will endeavour at all times to carry out my duties with fairness and integrity in all aspects of the work.“

Premier Christy Clark congratulated Thomson for taking the position.

She offered praise for his work as an M-L-A, saying he has represented his constituents well and conscientiously

`You bring integrity. You bring compassion. You are a man that stands on principle but a man who also finds a way to bring people together. As I often say, politics needs more rugby players.“

Clark went on to say that Thomson is known to bring calm and fairness of thought to the house and a level of decorum that has become unfamiliar over the years.

NDP leader John Horgan was gracious in congratulating Thomson praising his respectfulness adding it was appropriate to have a rugby guy in the chair given the raucousness of the legislature.

Horgan said Thomson has always been honourable.

“I found you to be respectful as the clerk suggested and fair with all members, during question period, outside of this house when there were issues in your file that needed to be discussed privately, you were always there.“

Horgan also said that Thomson`s leadership will be needed.`

“There are 24 new members in this place and they will see through your leadership and and your guidance and your deference for respect for all of us the type of leadership we will need in the days and weeks and months ahead.`

Horgan expressed gratitude to Thomson for taking on the challenge and assured respect for the decisions he will be making.
