Enderby Mayor Concerned About Cost Of Marijuana Law

The City of Enderby isn’t thrilled at the thought of what new marijuana laws will have on the community.

Council this week received a report from the Union of BC Municipalities on local government attitudes on legalization of marijuana.

Enderby Mayor Greg McCune says it’s scary.

“The fear for all municipalities and communities is the download to the individual municipalities. It’s going to be detrimental to probably all of us.”

McCune says he doesn’t believe the law will be ready and it will be left up to the provinces and municipalities to deal with

” You know they’re going to enact a law that is not going to be ready and it’ll just be us left to figure out how to monitor it, how to mop it up, how to clean it up, how to do all the thing attached with just terrible planning. Unfortunately, it looks like that’s what we’re going to get.”

McCune says there’s no way yet to tell what kind of costs municipalities like Enderby are going to have to incur.

” You know for our community, all of a sudden, what if we have to hire five policemen at a cost of you know 200 thousand a year – an extra one million dollars to our taxpayer to try to solve the problems that are going to arise.”

” And that’s just a start. You know we’d need bylaw enforcement people. You know we’d have a team of those. The average person’s taxes could go up fourty fold while they all try to figure out well that didn’t work that well. Oh, that could have been better.”

Enderby Council, like other municipal governments, will be relying on the Union of BC Municipalities to represent it in helping the provincial government formulate polices.

Greg McCune says he thinks the Liberal government feels it can simply pass the legislation and everybody will be happy because they’ll all be stoned.
