Kal Pier Damaged By Storm, Security Beefed Up To Prevent Usage

Efforts are being stepped up to enforce a closure of the Kal Beach Pier on Kalamalka Lake after the facility sustained storm damage.

The District of Coldstream and Regional District of North Okanagan have issued a release saying additional barricades will be installed to prevent entry onto the dock and “there will be a security presence to deter unlawful use in contravention of the posted closure.”

“Violations of these regulations will be subject to enforcement action including fines,” says the release.

Coldstream chief administrative officer Trevor Seibel says a portion on the right side of the T broke away from the rest of the structure during Thursday night’s storm.

“You can see it. It bounces quite significantly when the waves hit it. It hasn’t broke completely free because the pier itself is anchored into the ground, but its broken from the other piece, and now because it’s loose, somebody standing on it could be thrown quite easily if there’s waves,” Seibel tells Kiss FM

Seibel says modu-lock fencing will be added to try and block off the entrance, and bylaw officers will monitor the site, and educate people about the dangers.

“Ultimately there will always be people that will attempt to get on the pier even though it’s a safety hazard. Even last night, as the wind was pounding against the dock, there was young people on the dock that was bouncing around in the water,” adds Seibel.

Coldstream closed the pier a few weeks ago, but despite that, large numbers of beach goers have continued to access the dock.

“We haven’t been able to get in to see what the extent of the damage is, where the break is, but we will do that as soon as we can get access to it, when the water levels go down,” says Seibel.

The dock was a topic at Thursday’s Greater Vernon Advisory Committee meeting, with Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick suggesting it’s time to decide if if the pier should be kept or removed, due to drinking and other illegal activity taking place, along with other conflicts and injuries.
