No Flood Control Measures For Lagoon

The District of Coldstream has decided not to take action to reduce flooding concerns with the Kalavista lagoon.

The high levels on Kalamalka Lake have backed up the lagoon, causing water to come very close to — or into — homes on Kalavista Drive.

District CAO Trevor Seibel says a resident called for the district to dam the lagoon and pump some water back into the lake.

“We had a hydrologist with the Ministry of Environment come out an assess the situation and look at that option and whether it would provide some of the relief that was being sought.And based on that assessment, and a variety of factors, the risks and liability concerns, the unknown risks were too high to proceed at this time,” Seibel tells Kiss FM.

Seibel says no other action will be taken with the lagoon as this point.

“The lagoon is an extension of the lake, and the simple fact is the lake is about 3.5 feet higher than it normally is. The unfortunate part of living on a water body is when the lake levels rise, it’s very difficult to control,” adds Seibel.

The lagoon is home to numerous ducks and other water fowl.

It’s rising levels have led to water on part of the tennis court and boat launch parking area on Kalavista Drive.
