Arnold Studies Marine Environment
North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold’s work has taken him to Canada’s north.
Arnold is in Tuktoyaktuk as a member of the government’s Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
The committee is currently studying marine protected areas to ensure local interests and economic benefits are taken into account.
“So there’s some being looked at in the north. Some areas of interest have been identified and off the west coast of BC so we’re also going to be stopping into Prince Rupert on our way back down.”
Arnold says it’s important ti identify the areas for the right values
“But also including the other values that need to be considered when we’re closing off areas
or putting restrictions on areas.”
The Liberal government wants to increase marine protected areas by 5 per cent by the end of this year and by 10 per cent by the end of 2020.
