Coldstream Deals With High Water In Lagoon

The District of Coldstream is asking the provincial emergency services for help in dealing with flooding from Kalavista Lagoon.

Mayor Jim Garlick says diking and a pump may be the best way to lower the water table.

” And pumping it back into the lake. I know it will be a circulation of water. We’re going to be recycling it to see if we get it out before it comes back in.”

A number of homes in the area have been affected by flooding.

Jim Garlick says a sewer lift station in the area is also threatened, not just from the lake but from some homes.

” There were some pumps attached to houses that were attached to the sewer system and they were adding water to that line and the lift station then was having to run sort of continuously. ”

That could have overloaded the system.

The residents who were involved have now been identified.

” And getting them disconnected because that’s not allowed. You’re not supposed to be using it as a storm drain. It’s a sewage line not a storm line.”

The Mayor says they’re keeping a close watch for what happens when temperatures start going up again this weekend.

He says while staff has been told by provincial officials that Kalamalka Lake is peaking, he’s not so sure because there is still a huge snow pack on Silver Star which feeds Coldstream Creek headwaters.
