Update: Alert Lifted For Lumby Area Wildfire

A number of factors have led to the Regional District of North Okanagan cancelling an evacuation alert connected to a wildfire near Lumby.

The notice was issued Tuesday night for homes on Cooper and Hurt Roads due to strong winds pushing a fire on Cooper Mountain.

RDNO administrator David Sewell says the fire is now felt to be under control.

“With the weather conditions, falling winds, rain, and in fact the potential for slushy rain or snow, at the elevation at the fire site, the risk of lack of containment was sufficiently reduced,” Sewell tells Kiss FM.

About 30 homes were covered by the alert.

The BC Wildfire Service will have fresh crews out today to fight a wildfire burning near Lumby.

Max Birkner with the service says the fire is mapped now at 4 hectares, down from the 8 it was believed to have covered last night.

“We had firefighters there yesterday as well as the helicopter and air tankers on scene, but there are more firefighters going out there today and we are ready to send as many resources as necessary to suppress that fire.”

An evacuation alert for 10 homes on Cooper Road, Hurt Road and Deffies Creek Road is still in effect.

Lumby Fire Chief Tony Clayton had his crews deliver the warning last night.

“The crews were saying last night when they were giving out the evacuation notice there was ash coming down on them.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
