Rainbow Crosswalk Added To Downtown

May 18, 2017 | 9:00 PM

Vernon’s first Rainbow Crosswalk has being installed in the downtown.

The eight colour symbol is on 30th Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets in front of the former Liquidation World building.

Tim Rayner, an owner of Calibre Sport, agreed to cover the costs after hearing about proponent Travis Irmen’s idea.

“I was automatically empathetic of this young guy who stood up in front of council and plead his case, and that the only thing that would hold it up would be the cost. So I called my business partners, and said ‘What do you guys think? And they said ‘Let’s do it.'”

Rayner says the thermo-plastic tiles should last many years.

“They tell us 7 to 10 years. This location is good because it’s not at an intersection so we won’t get any turning or accelerating which you get at a regular crosswalk,” Rayner tells Kiss FM.

Irmen says each colour in the crosswalk has meaning, and it’s not just for the LGBTQ community.

Pink: sexuality
Red: respect for all life
Orange: healing journeys within all walks of life
Yellow: sunshine and air quality
Green: environment and nature
Turquoise: arts
Blue: peace/harmony
Violet: spirituality

The City will hold an official opening later this year.
