BC Greens Prepare To Negotiate

May 17, 2017 | 11:48 AM

Green Party leader Andrew Weaver is ready to sit down with the Liberals and NDP to see which has the right fit for his support.

He told a news conference this morning he plans to negotiate on his campaign theme of change you can count on.

” And that is why we’re going to go in. A good faith bargaining means you put your lists upfront. You don’t add things to you list and you go in with good faith bargaining.”

Weaver says his position is to ensure that good public policy is first and foremost in discussions and decision-making.

His priorities include having some form of party status, banning big money and discussion about proportional representation

“Our position had been that we would bring in proportional representation without a referendum because it is one of our six guiding principles and we cannot go against who we are. But we are open to discussing a referendum afterwards.”

Weaver is going to act as chief negotiator for the Greens when face-to-face negotiations begin.

Weaver added political scientist Norman Spector to the team.

” He’s providing in a consultant manner strategic political advice that frankly we don;’t have a long history as BC Greens to be able to tap into strategic political advice from deputy ministers or past chiefs of staff from twenty years ago. They don’t exist.”

Spector was a Deputy Minister in the Social Credit government of Bill Bennett and former Chief of Staff for Brian Mulroney and was part the team that negotiated the Free Trade Agreement.
