City Of Vernon Says No To More Free Parking Days

Apr 12, 2017 | 6:06 AM

The City of Vernon is putting its foot down when it comes to free parking requests from the Downtown Vernon Association.

The business group wanted seven free parking days and three days of no parking enforcement for downtown events this year.

Acting Mayor Catherine Lord says they started a new policy last year.

“Their request last year was for a little bit more and we said fine because the policy was not in place yet, but told them here’s the policy going forward. They
came back this year and asked for more again.”

Lord says lost revenue is part of the reason

“Part of it is also that it was actually the business owners initially who wanted to have parking meters, just simply because they want to keep people moving so that employees don’t park all day there.”

The city will continue to provide free parking for events like the Sunshine Festival and the DVA Light Up.
