Habitat for Humanity Hopes For Growth

Apr 10, 2017 | 8:37 AM

Habitat for Humanity in Vernon is gearing up now to finish a triplex on 35th Avenue.

Chairperson Glory Westwell says 150 thousand dollars in new money from the provincial government will help pay for workers.

” It’s going to really help us pay for some of the trades people that we’re going to have to pay. Usually, we get to do most of our work by volunteers but this year we’re going to have to pay for some.”

She’s hoping the three families can move in by late July.

While the focus now is to finish this project, there are hopes for future projects.

” Well, we’d like to be able to get some more land and continue building homes in Vernon for hard working families that need help.”

Glory admits finding land is not easy and Habitat looks for donations.

” Where if somebody has land that they can either donate to us or give it to us at a reasonable price and we can give the balance and a tax receipt would really help.”

She says the need for this kind of housing is going to be a constant as more people come to the area.
