Shuswap River Management Plan Moves Along
Stakeholders in the Shuswap River Motorized Vessel Management Mediation process have met for a second time and identified a trio of areas to begin a preliminary draft of recommendations for the North Okanagan Regional District.
Resolution mediator Alex Grzybowski says its a first initial step forward.
“In the interests of public education, improved enforcement and improved monitoring, but they haven’t got to anything specific under those topic areas. They have just identified them as areas where there is room for improvement.”
They also are examining speed limits for motorized craft according to Grzbowski.
“It’s certainly one approach and there are speed limits on the water now that aren’t enforced and we’re just trying to sort out where those apply because it was news to some people that those speed limits actually existed on the river.”
Grzybowski says both committees are getting on their feet and having constructive discussions that can lead to some resolutions.
“On the basis of those discussions they’ll move towards making recommendations where they make sense and where they reach some consensus.”
The next meeting of the Upper & Lower River Advisory Committees is April 7th.
