Road Closure Revisited?

Local politicians may want more debate on a controversial Vernon road project.

The Kal Lake Road upgrade — which has upset some local businesses — is not on Monday’s city council agenda, but Mayor Akbal Mund says it can be brought back for reconsideration.

“So if they voted in favour of the resolution, they can bring it up again at the next meeting, for reconsideration. This is by legislative law,” Mund tells Kiss FM.

Council voted 5-1 two weeks ago to close the road for up to 6 weeks with alternating delays for the rest of the 6 month time frame, between Browne Road and the Alpine Centre.

Councillor Scott Anderson was the lone vote against, while councillor Brian Quiring was absent.

Councillor Catherine Lord told the Morning Star, she is going back to talk to the impacted businesses to see if they have had a change of heart about the best plan.

The other option is a road closure for four months, which would get the project done quicker.

Anderson wanted council to investigate 24 hour, seven day a week construction, but got no seconder for his motion.

The 2.8 million dollar initiative will add a multi use path and upgrade services on the section from 14th Avenue to the Alpine Centre, which is the Coldstream boundary.

The current plan chosen by council will add an extra $279,000 to the cost due to the extra time it will take.
