UPDATE Nov. 15

A group of Coldstream residents made a presentation to council on Nov. 14 outlining their vision to enhance community safety, promote and protect an active lifestyle, improve transportation corridors, and contribute to the overall health and well-being of Coldstream residents and visitors.

Council received the presentation and referred the information to the North Kalamalka Area Advisory Committee (formerly Head of Lake committee) for inclusion in its deliberations.

Residents in a Coldstream neighbourhood have submitted a list of safety and recreational improvements they would like the District to consider.

The North Kal Neighbourhood Group is asking the District’s council to consider its suggestions as part of the Head of the Lake Plan that is being developed for the Kal Beach area.

“Our vision for change will enhance community safety, promote and protect an active lifestyle, improve transportation corridors, and contribute to the overall health and well-being of Coldstream residents, our neighbourhood, and visitors,” the residents’ presentation to council stated.

Among the requests is for completion of a designated community park/greenspace located at the corner of Pointe Sage Crescent and Pointe Sage Drive.

“In its existing state, it is unusable, unsightly, and overgrown with prickly weeds,” the proposal said.

The citizens are also asking for a safe pedestrian access and improved transportation connection from Pointe Sage Crescent to the Rail Trail.

“Residents and their pets have been using a steep dangerous path, with the assistance of a rope, to gain direct access to the Rail Trail from this location,” they said.

Improvements to Westkal Road also make their list to allow for safe interaction between vehicles, pedestrians, dogs, and cyclists.

“Pedestrians and cyclists face unsafe congestion and vehicles along narrow Westkal Road with no designated bike lane or sidewalk, between Kal Lake Road and Kickwillie Loop.”

The group said access points on and off the Rail Trail to Westkal Road are dangerous and steep with poor site lines and loose gravel.

“Residents have witnessed near misses, and cyclists falling or skidding on sections of the exits, specifically where the gravel transitions to pavement.”

And lastly, the residents would like to see more dog-friendly parks and beaches in Coldstream, noting success with that at some Vernon parks and beaches.

The residents suggest Pumphouse Beach could be converted into a dog-friendly beach, and that there should be discussion about allowing dogs on Kal Beach in the off season, from October to April.

“The increased activity may act as a deterrent to illegal activities as well as goose control. We would like to request a trial run as soon as it possible to do so,” the group said.

The presentation, which is on Coldstream council’s agenda for Nov. 14, was submitted by nine households on Stoneridge Drive, Edgewater Place, Pointe Sage Drive and Hofer Drive.
