Lumby Moving On Wastewater Treatment

Lumby’s Mayor says the village is still planning to have upgrades to its Wastewater Treatment Plant done by January.

A report by consultants to Council Monday night outlined three options for council to consider.

Kevin Acton says this phase of the plan needs more information on a population forecast because numbers compiled some years ago are outdated.

“They want us to give them a little bit more information because the more growth we forecast the more expensive the project becomes because ow you’re looking at a different type of facility if there’s more people.”

Acton says council get some professional advice and come back with a number for the consultants to be able to come up with an accurate design.

But he says the village has been pretty progressive in keep up with the numbers in recent years.

“So we just want to make sure that that’s taken into consideration and look at through the average growth rate for the area and just make sure that we’re kind of looking at the big picture instead of just a small town that lost some sawmills a few years ago because it certainly has changed.”

The plan is still to have an environmental impact study done by mid-August so the pubic can be consulted in time for options to be discussed this fall.

Acton says the public needs to see those options.

“We’ll go through a public consultations with the community first and see sort of what appetite they have for environmental impact and cost because some of those ideas will have big dollars attached to them.”

Acton says one priority is to ensure there’s some redundancy in the system so there are some fail safes.

He says a lot is going to depend on funding.

The Mayor says whatever is done will look into the future for both residential and industrial growth.

He notes the interest in the food and cannabis industries is growing and says they produce some effluent of a different nature than what is seen from a residential community so it’s important to think ahead.
