Community Sewer Gets Favourable Response at Swan Lake Meeting

Jun 21, 2018 | 8:35 AM

An open house this week on the proposed Swan Lake Commercial Area and Neighbourhood Plan had a good turnout.

More than 100 people showed up to hear more of what the regional district has in mind and offer their own views.

RDNO Board Chair Bob Fleming says development scenarios include how the area could look with or without community sewer.

“We gave people green dots for yes and red dots for no on certain scenarios and I think there was very strong feedback that community sewer is desired in the area – both from the residential and commercial side.”

Fleming says a community sewer and waste water treatment plan are seen as major components of the plan.

“People recognize the environmental issues that are out there. It’s very timely in that with the province initiating the wildlife management area for Swan Lake if we’re able to follow it up and create a community sewer and starting to take human waste influence from entering the lake that’ll be a big positive.”

The plan includes how to manage the area, primarily east of the highway to include commercial development with a mix of housing.

This week’s open house was the second.

Now staff will go back to draw up a full plan with what has been learned.

“The process on the local area planning process is leading towards introducing it to the board in, I would say late summer- early September where it would go through a public hearing where people would have another opportunity to register their opinions. ”

If adopted after that, it would be incorporated into the Official Community Plan.
