Bill C-45 Could Pass Tonight

Jun 19, 2018 | 5:15 PM

Word out of Ottawa is that recreational marijuana could be legal this week, in fact Senator Jim Munson says the bill could even pass tonight.

Conservatives continue to say Bill C-45 is flawed and won’t reduce marijuana consumption by young Canadians.

The Senate proposed several amendments to the legislation, including one which would have authorized provinces to prohibit the home cultivation of marijuana plants, but those were rejected by the Trudeau Liberals.

There was an amendment to the federal government’s cannabis legalization bill proposed that would have recognized the authority of provincial governments to ban home cultivation of marijuana plants if they choose, but the Senators have voted 45-35 against insisting on it.

The government rejected 12 other amendments approved by the Senate.

What that does is clear the way for them to finally pass Bill C-45,  perhaps even later on tonight as senators conformed to the will of the elected House of Commons.

The federal bill specifies that individuals may grow up to four plants per dwelling,  however Quebec and Manitoba have already decided to ban home-grown weed despite that.
