M-P Says Summit Opens Door To Peace

The North Okanagan-Shuswap’s rep in Ottawa is taking an optimistic outlook to the US-North Korea summit.

While some analysts are questioning how effective the agreement between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will be, Conservative M-P Mel Arnold feels it’s at least a start for discussions.

“It’s good to see the two leaders getting together and speaking. Hopefully it means some sort of peace agreement or to work towards that direction. I think it would be good not just for Canada, but the rest of the world,” Arnold tells Beach Radio News.

Arnold sees nothing but positives from the meeting, saying just to get the two leaders together is the biggest development in decades.

“At least the two leaders got together and we’re able to talk. To open the discussion is the big part. They may be a long ways away from an actual final agreement, but at least it’s a start.”

As for Trump’s recent criticism of Justin Trudeau, Arnold says he hopes the negotiators can overlook that, and a develop a trade deal that’s good for both countries.

“I’ve been contacted by employers and businesses in the North Okanagan-Shuswap that are concerned with some of the trade issues going on, so hopefully they can solve some of these issues.”

Arnold says dairy and poultry producers are among those who have stated concerns over the US’s push against Canada’s supply management system.
