Council Leaves City Hall for Special Meeting

The budget and the strategic plan.

Those are the two main topics for a special open meeting of Vernon council being held this afternoon at Lakers Club House.

Mayor Akbal Mund says they will review progress on council’s priorities made over the last few years, with their mandate coming to an end in a few months.

“We’ll leave some of the new stuff up to the new council to decide because we know the time frame doesn’t work for us. Some of those priorities may come up, and we’ll just go, ‘that’s probably up to the new council to decide, not us,'” says Mund.

Mund says they’ve made progress on a number of goals, including deciding what to do with the Civic Arena.

“We’ve already decided that we’re going to demolish the Civic Arena, so whether that gets done before the new council comes in or not, I’m not sure,” Mund tells Beach Radio News.

Mund expects the 80 year old arena will be torn down by the end of the year, but he says the next council could come in, and decide they want to re-discuss the issue.

One of the city’s goals four years ago was to find a resolution to the Kin Race Track dispute.

The City and Regional District of North Okanagan recently won a legal case over use of the site, but the Okanagan Equestrian Society has until June 15th to decide if they will appeal the ruling.

One of the key issue that will be deferred to the new council is planning for a new RCMP building.
