Lake Country To Monitor Trails But No Money For Big Projects

Lake Country Council has had to say no to a big ask from the group Walk Around Lake Country.

WALC, as it’s known, asked council this week for one hundred thousand dollars to help it develop and maintain trails and pathways in the District.

Mayor James Baker says the group plays a major role, but the money isn’t there right now.

Baker says their main concern is that when the Rail Trail and Pelmewash Trail are done, people will want to do a loop around Wood Lake.

” Our Woodsdale Road, which would be a part of the loop, doesn’t have safe walking and safe cycling on it on all stretches, the eastern end and particularly the western end.”

Baker says it’s a good suggestion from the group.

He feels the loop will probably attract thousands of people, noting that people could come from Vernon to loop around and go back and from Kelowna to do the same.

“They’re saying make sure that we know it’s safe to cycle along Woodsdale Road, so that is a good ask actually, so we’ll try to get on that.”

The Mayor says the District would try to go after grants to get started on the Woodsdale Road section of the loop.

Aside from that, WALC says it has identified over 100 Km of additional trails and pathways thatwould greatly improve the community.

It says a Trails Master plan with a regular, committed budget every year, justlike Sewer, Water, Transportation is needed.
