Go Indoors When The Thunder Roars

Thunderstorm warning issued in the North Okanagan

Jul 15, 2026 | 4:11 PM

Along with a heat wave, Environment Canada has warned that a storm would roll through the North Okanagan Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The weather agency said a severe thunderstorm was being tracked moving into the valley, and that it could bring lightning strikes, heavy rain, gusting winds, and even hail.

“Damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters or trees is likely,” Environment Canada warned.

“Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility.”

The B.C. Wildfire Service also noted lightning strikes could spark wildfires and strong winds could cause them to spread rapidly, and advised people to be cautious recreating outdoors and be safe with any activity that could potentially cause a wildfire.

People were advised to go indoors or seek shelter when the thunder cracks.

Anyone who spots a wildfire should report the sighting to the BCWS toll free at 1-800-663-5555, by dialing *5555 on a cellphone, or through the Wildfire Service’s app.
