Lumby Cemetery Upgrade

Apr 19, 2018 | 6:45 AM

The Village of Lumby hopes to tidy up the local cemetery.

Mayor Kevin Acton says things are looking a bit slip-shod.

“We’ve got a company, Erik Lees & Associates, that are going to be doing a strategic plan for our cemetery this year. We’re all very excited about that. it’s looking a little bit rough up there and we’re looking forward to getting that taken care of.”

It’s all part of  master plan to upgrade the cemetery.

There’s all sorts of different gravesites and hasn’t really been any rules in place, because of course, the real estate up there wasn’t a big deal when it’s a small town and there’s few people being buried. But now with it showing up a bit.”

Acton says plans for the cemetery had to be put off last year due to the extensive flooding situation that gripped the village for months.

But it’s time now to get started look at how the cemetery meets the needs of the community.

“And then we’ve gotta start looking towards the future. One of the things we know, I think it’s about 70 per cent of people are getting cremated now instead of buried, so we have to look at better ways of storing those types of containers.”

Acton says portions of the land are owned by various groups, including the village and a local church.
